Yesterday I had a discussion over the phone with a guy that works in the industry but he would like to start a PhD. He was telling me his ideas and I realized that the previous year on my Master of Research was not futile. I could give him some tips on how to go about a PhD proposal that I summarize below in case someone is interested and may find these useful.
Tips for writing a research proposal:
- Define a research question that is focused on the area you are interested in
- Show from the research question how you are planning to approach the topic in order to answer the question (methodology and methods)
- Explain what your contribution will be in the existing literature by defining the gap that your study will fill
- Articulate your ideas clearly and link them to what has already been done and describe how your idea will shed light to the field and why it is worth investigating the topic
Remember that your proposal is just an initial step that will evolve and change as you immerse yourself in good pieces of literature in your field and get to know different methods that have been used to research your area.
Even if your proposal is not successful this does not mean that it is not good quality, try to submit it to another educational institution. Timing is important.
Happy learning !
